Chapter Twenty-Two

My mom plans to get some of Noah’s stuff for him today while we go to school. Neither one of us want to go, but my mom forces us. She refused to let us stay home no matter how many times I asked and how many excuses I had. Noah is still very upset and doesn’t feel ready to face the other students. I want to stay home and shelter him from it all. At least he looks a little better today. He seems more stable. He isn’t crying or shaking and he’s actually having regular conversations. He even asks me if we can play video games after school.

It’s a good thing he’s more stable today because as soon as we walk into school we are thrown into chaos. It seems like everywhere we go people whisper about us. “I can hear you, losers!” I yell at a group of them, fed up with their behavior.

At lunch, Noah sits at my table with me. “So I guess you guys are the stars of the rumor mill right now,” Luke comments.

“Unfortunately,” I nod. “I hate high school. No one has anything better to do than spread gossip about people. I’m so glad we graduate this year.”

“Everyone’s talking about the pastor’s son being a fag,” Noah tells me. “It’s like the highlight of their whole lives.”

“Who told them?” Sara asks.

“Emma,” Noah and I answer in unison.

“Where is she?”

“Where she always is,” I say, glancing over at the ‘Jesus Freak’ table. They all glare at us and whisper.

“Wow, that’s so nice of them,” Sara rolls her eyes.

“Yeah…”

When school ends, Noah and I are eager to get home, but several people block our exit. It’s the group of Christian teens that had glared at us during lunch, the same people who Noah used to call friends.

“Sinners,” one hisses.

“You’re going to burn in Hell,” another threatens.

“You disgust me, Noah. We really thought you were different. You’re the pastor’s son for God’s sake.”

“Just shut up all of you!” Emma shrieks. Tears stream down her face.

They move aside and let us pass, but glare at us until we’re out of sight.

“I guess we survived,” I tell Noah when we get in my car.

“Yeah.”

“It’s going to get better. As soon as another scandal happens, they’ll forget all about us. And the Jesus Freaks will move on. Besides, we’re graduating soon and we’ll leave them all behind.”

“I know. You’re right. It’s just rough.”

“I’m really proud of you, Noah. I love you.” I lean as far as my seatbelt will allows and kiss him. The corners of his mouth twist up in a half smile. I shift the car into drive. “Let’s go home.”
