Kemikal had their primary units at an industrial complex on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Yvonne and Dewi parked on the tarmac near the entrance of the one-storey building, and walked towards the double doors which opened automatically.

A forty-something male in a shirt and tie, sleeves rolled up, came towards them, holding out his hand. “DI Giles?” He directed this at Dewi.

The DS nodded towards Yvonne. “This is DI Giles; I am DS Hughes.”

Yvonne smiled at them both. “And you must be Mr Burton?”

“Kevin Burton, but plain old Kevin will do.”

“Thank you for agreeing to talk with us.”

“No problem.” He grinned. “It breaks up the day. Come through to the office. Would you like a coffee?”

They passed two other gentlemen who were signing documents and checking over consignments for delivery, as others loaded stacks of boxes onto a transit van.

“I’d love one, thanks.” Dewi nodded.

“Milk; no sugar.” The DI said, as they followed Burton to the office on the right side of the factory. “Is this the whole site?” she asked, taking it all in.

“We have another plant in Telford.” He threw the answer over his shoulder as he wedged the office door open and showed them inside. “The Telford plant takes care of English orders. We supply Wales.”

“I see.” Yvonne sat in the seat he had pulled out for her, in front of a busy desk.

Dewi sat next to the DI.

Kevin Burton switched on a kettle in the corner and readied three mugs. “How can we help you?” he asked, spooning instant into each vessel. “I’m guessing this is about what happened to Jon Tudor’s wife?”

“It is…” The DI took out her notebook. “And to ask you about Jonathan, and what you all do here at the plant?”

Burton stirred the mugs before handing them to the detectives. “Fire away,” he said. “If it helps, I’ll tell you all I can.”

“I understand you are a chemical distribution firm?”

He nodded. “We have a secure site here, hold a licence to distribute hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, and can carry out COSHH assessments where needed. That stands for Care Of Substances Hazardous to Health,” he added.

“Thank you.” The DI saw no reason to point out their awareness of COSHH. “Do you take regular inventories at the plant?”

“We do monthly stock takes, and compare them with the levels expected on our system. The next one is due sometime next week.” He cocked his head. “Why do you ask?”

“I wondered whether you could tell us if items were missing? Unaccounted for?”

“Mistakes do creep in on the system, but we can usually find and correct them after a stock take, yes. We carry out extra checks on the most hazardous chemicals.”

“At your last stock take, did you find anything missing?”

“I think we found a couple of discrepancies. I am pretty sure we got to the root of those and ironed them out.” He narrowed his eyes. “What has this got to do with Jonathan?”

“It may have nothing to do with him, but his wife may have died because of chemical contamination in the park.
