The bulbous white lily came alone,

Appeared after one night,

Like the ghost of a dead sister inviting me home

To the window above the winter garden.

Home now is not a room in my mother’s house,

It is the city in itself, any part of it.

The old, silver bridge that masks the green water,

The statues of unknown artists, the lunatics, the toy ships.

Home is knowing my place in Father’s new family,

And after we measure and discuss the success of our lives,

Everyone comes up short. Not one of us has it all.

And whoever pretends best gains nothing.
