A Time for Learning

The school was dark. Bert and Oliver were sniffing around the garbage. ‘You will find the best clues for any crime in the rubbish bin,’ advised Oliver, as if Bert was likely to spend the rest of his life tracking down criminals.

‘So you are sure that Albert was kidnapped?’ asked Bert.

‘There’s nothing else to explain it is there? My initial investigations revealed that the boy was happy and enjoyed his life, why would he run away?’ Oliver liked answering questions with questions. He pushed back the lid on the school’s garbage skip. It released a gasp of intoxicating decay that the detective didn’t seem to notice as he turned to Bert and said, ‘Keep an eye out for trouble’ before diving into the bin. With his top half submerged in the garbage and his legs seesawing in the air, he threw canteen waste left and right in his search for clues. A moment later his feet returned to the ground as he pushed himself out of the bin, his glasses were missing but had been replaced by a blackened banana skin.

Bert asked, ‘Did you find anything?’

Oliver sighed, ‘Only garbage. We must continue.’

Pointing at the banana skin Bert said, ‘Um. You might want to deal with that first.’

Oliver put his hand up to his forehead and found the rotting mass. ‘I’ll be back in a moment,’ he said wiping his hand on his jacket. He then plunged his head and shoulders back into the skip emerging a few seconds later with his sunglasses back in place. ‘Onward,’ he commanded.

Liz tried to relax. She was happy that the untidy policeman had left and even happier that he had taken Bert with him. On the phone the police had said someone should stay at the house but that felt like the wrong thing to do. Hampered by her confusion she sat on the sofa and eventually nodded off to sleep. A dream came to her with urgency. In it, strangely, Liz sat on the sofa in her living room. She opened her eyes and saw a large, yellow ball of light floating above the coffee table. The ball wasn’t fiery like the sun, it wasn’t hot and it didn’t hurt her eyes to look at it. ‘Am I dreaming?’ she said out loud.

‘Of course you are dreaming,’ the ball of light had a refined female voice.

‘Who are you?’ Liz asked.

‘My name is Galura. Now pay attention and remember everything I have to say.’

Liz sat up straight and gave her full attention to the ball of light.

Galura continued, ‘You have a very important job ahead of you. You must go and find Albert.’

‘But I was told to wait here, in case he came home.’

‘He’s not coming home. You must go out and find him for yourself.’

Liz didn’t disagree, it made more sense to go and look for him than hang around the house, but she did have one question, ‘Where will I start?’

‘I’m not completely sure, but you’ll work it out.
