HUMAN EVOLUTION

Three words characterize humans and their ancestors: migration, migration, migration.

‘Did the genome of our cave-dwelling predecessors contain a set or sets of genes which enable modern man to compose music of infinite complexity and write novels with profound meaning? It looks as though the early Homo was already provided with the intellectual potential which was in great excess of what was needed to cope with the environment of his time.’

SUSUMU OHNO51

About 7 million years ago in Africa, the evolutionary line that led to human beings split from the line that led to chimpanzees and bonobos. Over the following millions of years, several species of our hominin ancestors left their cradle and spread throughout the world in multiple waves of migration. When our species, Homo sapiens, arose about 300,000 years ago, it found itself sharing the planet with several other types of humans. Mysteriously, all the other species of hominins have become extinct, leaving us as the last humans standing.
