THIRTY-FOUR

The Old Man sat inside his office at Fairmont International, transfixed by an image of Nate Mowbray on his computer screen as he envisioned the boy inside a cage. His stupid asshole father had signed the kid’s death warrant by killing Brent Harvey; there would be no turning back. The Old Man intended to relish every second of destroying detective Mowbray’s life, and that of his pretty-boy partner.

What a pair of dim-witted fools.

Ghost had already begun preparations for the abduction, thinking it might be easy to snatch Nate while he rode his bike around after school. Detective Perkins’s mother was fated to die of a prescription overdose from the pills she kept in her bedside drawer. It promised to be a perfect way to alleviate the Old Man’s growing depression. When the phone on his desk began ringing, he picked it up.

“Yes,” he answered coldly, irritated by the notion of speaking with LA’s mayor, Simon Ryan.

“Are you sure you want to go ahead with this?” Ryan asked.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“The two detectives are well-liked within the LAPD. Their brothers won’t swallow this ploy without hearing them out. Do you think they’ll believe Perkins and Mowbray are corrupt?”

The Old Man enjoyed listening to pissants like Ryan on occasion. His absurd portrayal of self-righteousness would soon be swallowed up by an abasing apology, returning him to a role of servitude. It was a well-worn path for bugs with no spine.

“When a picture gets crafted in unbreakable steel, it doesn’t matter what people believe. Everything comes down to how strong the case against them is. The evidence never lies — surely you understand this. Mind you, having an endless supply of money helps. I’ve recruited a dirty detective to watch over Mowbray and his partner, but you must still play your part. Surely I can rely upon you to step up?”

Ryan’s prolonged silence was intense.

“I don’t see how I have a choice,” he eventually retorted.

“Everyone has free will.”

“Who is your man in HSS?”

“That’s not your concern, but he was cheap. I bought his badge with a promise to set him up on a crime podcast in the future.”

“What do you need me to do?”

The Old Man chuckled demeaningly.

“I’ve approached some corrupt officers in the GND, and they have agreed to supply my people with drugs and cash to plant at the detectives’ homes. Once everything’s ready, a raid will be organized through the DEA to ensure the detectives’ incarceration. Everything needs to move once I give the go-ahead. You’ll receive documentation outlining the culpability of Mowbray and Perkins, proving more than sufficient to lock them away. After their arrest, they’ll be kept in custody while facing trial. However, I’ll make sure they never set foot inside a courtroom. One might say that’s the easiest part.”

“I still think this plan has serious question marks hanging over it. What happens when they spill the beans on Filii Reprobi? All it takes is for one colleague to believe their testimony, and you’ll be right back at square one.
