Chapter 10

Amy swallowed the last bite of her delicious salad roll. She tossed the paper bag and wrapping into a nearby bin.

Ben grinned. “Good throw.”

She sat up straighter on the bench seat. “Your turn.”

He scrunched up the paper wrapping from his meatball roll and lined up his target. The ball of paper landed in the middle of the bin.

“Well done.” She sipped her latte. “What are you up to in the orchards?”

“Praying we don’t get hail before we pick the crop at the end of the season.” He crossed his jeans-clad legs at his ankles, leaning back into the bench seat.

“Do you have a large crop?”

He nodded. “It’s been a good season so far. If I can keep the birds away, the animals away, we’ll do okay.”

“Animals?”

“The kangaroos cause chaos when a herd decides to take a shortcut through the orchards. I spotted an emu the other day. And the wombats dig holes too close to the tree roots or in the middle of the track between the rows.”

“Don’t forget the snakes.” She shivered. “I freak out whenever I see the skin they’ve shed lying around.”

“I can coexist with the snakes who eat vermin and don’t mess with the apple trees.” He sipped his coffee. “As long as you leave them alone, they won’t cause you any harm.”

She frowned. “I’ve had too many close encounters with poisonous snakes to feel relaxed knowing they are anywhere near me. I wear hiking boots in summer if I’m outdoors and in a snake-prone area.”

He chuckled. “You need to relax. When Chloe was two or three, she kicked what she thought was a brown tree branch in our back garden at Sunny Ridge. But the branch moved and she ran screaming into the house.”

“Poor girl. She must have been petrified.”

“It took Jenny hours to console her, and she didn’t disobey her mother again by sneaking outside without permission. I saw that snake a couple of times, but it had gone into hiding by the time we called the ranger out to catch it.”

“Ugh, I’m all spooked now. I have a regular gardening service that keeps my lawn short and the yard clear of nice hiding places for snakes.”

“You don’t mow your own lawns?”

She wrinkled her nose. “I get hay fever from cut grass. So far I’ve survived this spring without any major problems.”

“I didn’t know you suffered from hay fever.”

“You don’t remember what happened when I was twelve or thirteen?”

He shook his head.

“The grass-clippings fight at the farm, boys versus girls?”

“Hey, that wasn’t my idea. I think Luke was settling a score with Rachel.”

“Is that how you remember it?”

“I know Luke got in a lot of trouble.”

“My mother called your mother, because I had two days off school due to eyes that oozed gunk and were nearly swollen shut.”

“Oh, Amy, I had no idea. I’m sorry if I threw grass in your eyes.”

She smiled. “It’s okay. By memory I think Rachel enjoyed getting Luke into trouble way too much.”

“What’s new? It’s interesting
