GIVE ’EM HELL, JAKE
1945
Once Beser’s security briefing was complete, the members of Project A went back to Ramsey’s office, and he began to address some of the problems he had in his group. He gave Beser a more thorough briefing as to what was expected of him. At no time did he come right out and say they were trying to build an atomic bomb, but he used phrases like “fundamental forces being released” and “chain reactions taking place,” causing a “light hotter than one thousand suns.” The assumption was, if Beser had enough brains and stayed there long enough, he would figure it out. By the end of the first day, he knew exactly what was going on.
What was immediately apparent was that they had a bomb, and they had initiators for the bomb fairly well developed, but they needed something that would set the thing off at a given height above the ground. It had to be variable, whereby the topographic geography of the target city would be fed into their calculations, and they would decide how high above the ground it needed to go off. Beser didn’t think that sounded like much of a problem at all, and remembering the tech orders in his briefcase, he asked, “Does anyone have a Sig-Five catalog?”
“No. What’s a Sig-Five?” asked Ramsey.
“It’s a stock catalog of the Signal Corps. It lists everything in production. It comes out every month. I’m sure they have it over at the base signal office.”
Ramsey sent an assistant over, and half an hour later, he came back with a big telephone-directory-type book. Beser sifted through the pages until he found what he was looking for.
“See this?” He pointed at the page. “It’s an AN/APS-Thirteen, a tail warning radar that we built for the B-17s and B-24s flying over Europe to alert pilots that someone’s on their tail. It has a variable range gate. It rings a bell and flashes a light in the cockpit to warn the pilot that there’s something in his lethal range. This thing will fit where you want it to fit. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel like you’ve been trying to do. Not only that, but I have the tech order in my briefcase.”
Ramsey invited everyone besides Beser to leave the room.
Over the next two to three hours, they went through the ins and outs of the equipment and redesigned the fuse of the “gimmick.” Ramsey got on the telephone and called in the appropriate code to Dayton, Ohio, for those people to get up to Camden, New Jersey; get twenty boxes off the production line; and get those boxes to Dayton immediately.
Beser and Art flew through the night to Dayton, Ohio. They got there at 5:00 a.m.,
