General Tips for Gun Range Safety

The following assumptions are the basis of a good range safety plan. The term “safe range” means all shots are fired in the direction of the targets; that users keep firearms unloaded and actions open when arriving or departing; that firearms are unloaded except when shooters are ready on the firing line; that users handle only firearms with which they are familiar and will always use the proper ammunition.

Enforcement of the rules ties the separate parts into a cohesive and workable safety plan. Remember, a range is only as safe as the manner in which it is used and operated. You must obey all posted rules and regulations (even when nobody is looking), and conduct yourself in a responsible manner. Gun ownership may be a right, but shooting at the range is a privilege.

Gun-handling rules are of primary importance at every range, inside and outside. They should always appear first in a range safety plan and are prominently displayed at several locations throughout the range. As a minimum, the following rules (repeated elsewhere in this book) are critical to safe and continuous enjoyment of a day at the range:

• ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

• ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

• ALWAYS keep the firearm unloaded until you are ready to shoot.

• Know how your firearm operates and what the range procedures are for a mechanical (gun or cartridge) failure.

• Be sure the firearm and ammunition is compatible. Think about carrying only one gauge or caliber of ammunition when you are shooting. When at a shooting range with more than one firearm, use one at a time and when complete, store that firearm and its ammunition before using the next one.

• Understand what to do in case you are involved in or observe an accident.

• Be sure of the target and what lies beyond it. When at a shooting range, be mindful also of adjacent areas and act accordingly.
