Chapter 12

I didn’t have a wide emotional range. I felt anger. Frustration, when things didn’t go my way. Satisfaction when they did.

Lust, when my mate crawled onto my lap in the middle of the night and let me taste her beautiful mouth.

Right now, I was feeling oddly sympathetic. Perhaps spending time with Shira had made me more compassionate because the whole flight back to our den from Northgales, where we’d dropped off Ffion and her mates, I’d been reflecting on the afternoon’s events. The way Ffion had screamed when Glendower had murdered her fathers right in front of her face. I realized that I pitied her.

I didn’t like it. No one needed this many emotions.

It could only be Shira’s presence that was changing me. It wasn’t like her own emotions were rubbing off on me. She was possibly more closed off than I was, though I knew that bothered her in a way it never bothered me. Every night I watched her curl up and scrunch her eyes closed. She’d spend five or so minutes looking acutely miserable, before sighing like she was giving up and rolling onto her back.

Every night.

I wanted to ask the others, to see if her behavior was concerning, but I didn’t want to break her confidence by mentioning it. Shira was at her most vulnerable in those late night hours. It was a privilege that I got to see that side of her.

I had eight brothers, but only one sister, and she was much younger than me. I had spent little time around females. Maybe Shira’s habits were normal.

As we approached the den, foreboding crept up my throat like bile. The front door was open — all five of Ezra’s fathers spilling out onto the landing, looking tense. No tiny black-haired goddess in sight.

I didn’t have to speak to them to know Shira was gone. As we approached the den, I felt a hole pierce my chest, growing larger the nearer we got to where our mate was meant to be. It didn’t hurt. It felt like a part of me was missing. Our mate had taken a piece of us with her when she’d left us.

Ezra, leading the flight, beat his ebony wings faster, landing with a thud that made his fathers cringe and shifting back before we had the chance to get our talons on the ground.

“Where is she?” he roared, pain dripping from every word, as I shifted and moved back against the wall so the others had room to land, shoving my legs awkwardly into my trousers.

“Where is Shira? Was there an attack? Did someone take her?” Ezra asked frantically. I would laugh at his optimism if this situation wasn’t so fucking awful. I doubted there was a single soul in Avalon who wanted Shira away from here more than Shira wanted to be away from here.

“Son…” Ezra’s father and former Alpha, Yaron, began before trailing off awkwardly and glancing back at his flight. A desolate-looking Leo, in particular. Seff, Hiram, and Levi had all landed and gathered in closer.
