Our Sight becomes clear when we turn the inner eye within, and as a result of this quest to know ourselves, our perspectives shift and the world around us changes—a mirror of our own internal changes. When we can see the people, circumstances, and events in our lives for what they are, rather than through the filter of our past hurts, future worries, and self-imposed restrictions, we hone our Sight—the ability to see beyond our limitations and the illusions they bring.

Healing

The power to heal wounds and restore health is probably one of the attributes for which holy and Otherworldly women are most famous. Whether it is through the use of magical ointments crafted by figures such as Morgan le Fay, the restoration of the mortally wounded Arthur by bringing him to Avalon, or the Cauldron of Regeneration’s ability to bring dead warriors back to life—healing is a central part of a wise one’s identity. Geoffrey of Monmouth specifically details Morgen’s mastery of herbal medicines to cure all illnesses—an art she has also taught to her sisters, although she exceeds them all.

Working with plant allies for medicinal and magical purposes is a cornerstone of the modern Avalonian Tradition, and many sisters immerse themselves in this study. In addition to their healing properties, herbs can be used as energetic tools that facilitate personal growth and build bridges of connection with the Divine. There are many healing modalities, however, and whether one chooses a vocation in a field of medicine, through the practice of a wholistic discipline, as a mental health professional, as one who midwives babies into the world, or who supports the dying as they depart the world—healing is a deeply effective way to be in service as a priestess.

Yet, even if this is not where one’s call to service lies, healing is nevertheless foundational to the work of the Avalonian Tradition. It is a powerful commitment to do the work required of us to bring the whole self into balance, to use our inner and outer resources wisely, to honor our limitations, to claim and celebrate our accomplishments, and to take time to engage in meaningful self-care. The more whole we are, the more we know the truth of ourselves—both the light and the dark—the more healed we become. With that healing, we are able to be in better service to ourselves, our communities, and the goddesses of Avalon.

Ritual and Sacrifice

One of the more obvious tasks of a priestess is to serve as a facilitator: to build a bridge between the self and the Divine, to create sacred spaces and experiences that facilitate the building of bridges on behalf of others, and to spend time in devotional works intended to honor the deities we serve and to receive their guidance.

We know that in ancient times, priestesses in Celtic cultures performed ceremonies of sacrifice that also served as methods of augury, engaged in ecstatic ritual practices, facilitated rites of kingship, and acted as initiators into mystery traditions. They also served to
