With analytical inquiries—that is, those in which the Runecaster wishes to illuminate his or her present situation or state of being—steads 1 and 2 are of primary importance. They reveal the “present” (2) and its true background (1)—while (3) will indicate the direction things are about to go. On the other hand, in efforts to predict how things are going to be (and from the Germanic point of view of time and causality, we can see this could be difficult), the Skuld-stead is primary. Skuld delivers the oracular force, while steads 1 and 2 show the foundations of this tendency. (At the same time, in “predictive” work, steads 1 and 2 show us the areas that might need magical alteration in order to avoid harmful potentialities.)

The Valknútr: A Ninefold Method

An expansion of the threefold method is to be found in the valknútr layout. Again, a method of casting can be used which is then completed by picking up and laying out nine staves in the following steads and order:
