FLUSHED
The water swirled rapidly down the toilet with a loud gurgle. âWhere do all the goldfish go?â asked Rachel.
âDown,â said her older sister, Pamela.
The two young girls stood over the toilet in their bathroom. They had just flushed another dead goldfish â the seventh or eighth? â into the swirling waters. Its final, fishy resting place.
Rachel peered into the water. âDo you think theyâll ever swim back?â
âTheyâre dead,â said Pamela. âTheyâre gone. The water flushes them out into the ocean or something.â
âWhat if this time the goldfish wasnât dead?â Rachel worried aloud. âMaybe it was just sleeping. Sleeping looks like dead.â
âIt was not sleeping. It was sick,â said Pamela. She lowered the toilet lid and walked back to their bedroom. Rachel followed close behind.
Pamela flopped down on her bed and picked up a magazine. âGoldfish get sick so easy,â she said, flipping the magazine pages.
âBut everybody gets sick,â said Rachel.
âNot me,â said Pamela. âI donât even get colds.â
Rachel sighed. Her throat was feeling scratchy. Her nose had been plugged up ever since she woke that morning too. Rachel hated colds.
âThe fish wouldnât have gotten sick if you hadnât fed it too much,â said Pamela, without looking up from her reading.
âBut it was hungry,â Rachel protested.
âHow can you tell?â
âIts sad, sad eyes,â said Rachel.
âFish eyes all look the same,â Pamela said.
Rachel coughed. She put her hand to her throat and rubbed it.
Pamela looked up quickly and stared at her sister.
âWhat?â demanded Rachel. âWhatâs your problem?â
Pamelaâs eyes were wide and frightened. âNothing. Never mind.â
Rachel looked away. She did not want to get a cold. Everyone would make too much fuss.
But the next morning, she couldnât get out of bed. Her mother came into the bedroom, sat next to Rachel, and felt her forehead. âOh dear,â said her mother. âItâs a fever.â
âI donât have a fever,â mumbled Rachel from her damp pillow.
âShh!â whispered her mother.
The woman looked around the room, as if afraid that someone was listening to them. She looked down at her daughter and shook her head. âAnd you looked flushed too,â she said.
âFlushed?â said Rachel quietly.
âYour face is all red, honey,â said her mother. âIâll go get you a cold cloth for your forehead.â She bent down close and said, âIâll tell your sister. Donât worry, Rachel. I know youâll get better soon.â
Rachel watched her mother walk out of the room. I donât have a cold, she thought. I donât! And Mom is right. Iâll feel better soon. Itâs nothing.
The next day, she felt worse. Her temperature had risen. Her throat was raw and raspy. Her cough could be heard throughout the house.
Pamela came to look in on her sister. She stood by the door with a frown on her face. âCan you please keep it down?â she said. âEveryone can hear you.â
âI canât help it,â said Rachel. Suddenly, she coughed again, long and loud.
Pamela looked out the window. âToo late,â she said.
Outside the house, two huge gold-colored fins reached down. The fins gripped either side of the building, raised it up in the air, and then began shaking it.
