TURNING YOUR BACK ON THE IDEA OF PERFECTION

Why do we expect brides to look perfect?

Well, for one, we wholesale objectify brides. From the spectacle of walking down the aisle to the lifting of the veil, traditionally brides have been things we visually consume. What’s even more concerning is that some brides are taking their friends down with them. Enter the whole bridesmaids group-weight-loss situation. There is an entire new crop of fitness classes and bootcamps intended for wedding parties. We’ve also heard of brides mandating what swimwear their bridal parties wear to avoid pre-wedding tan lines. We’ve heard of brides having Botox parties for their bridesmaids or sending out coupons for diet meal delivery services. Let us go on the record to say that all of this is like paper underwear. Just because it exists, doesn’t mean it is a good idea. If you are even remotely considering asking someone to change their appearance to be part of your wedding, you’d better check yourself.

A well-meaning person (but, let’s be honest, total asshole) might suggest you drop a few pounds before dress shopping, or to spring for eyelash extensions. You do you.
