Beware Of Matchmakers

Wherever there is money to be made, there will be shady operators. Like sharks sniffing the blood of wounded prey, there are hosts of dubious players ready to pounce upon unsuspecting job-hunters.

Apart from headhunters, there are plenty of career coaches and consultants who claim to be able to take over on your behalf and open up whole worlds of job opportunities for you. And all you need to do is entrust them with a (large) fee.

As a whole, they are an even more questionable lot than even the most unscrupulous of headhunters. Some of the seemingly classier operations advertise in the appointments sections of the Sunday newspapers or the Financial Times with straplines screaming “Let us do the work” or “Your time is too precious to waste!”

They may organize seminars or other events and invite speakers from big names in executive search or industry. But it doesn’t mean that those speakers or their organizations endorse the matchmaker.

They say that they will write your CV. But why should you pay someone else to write your CV when you are the only person who really knows your most relevant strengths and the weaknesses that you need to be careful of?

They maintain that they will put your CV in front of hundreds of top recruiters. They claim that their sophisticated computer system will identify dozens of perfect opportunities. Or that they will facilitate meetings with senior managers desperate to meet job-hunters just like you. But if they were really so good at what they claim to be able to do, then don’t you think you would know someone who had used the services of such a firm?

However, don’t confuse these matchmaking businesses with consultants who might be able to offer your specific advice or coaching on particular topics. But always pay for these services on an hourly basis so you know exactly what you are getting. For example, a psychologist might be able to use psychometric tests to analyze and help you understand weaknesses as well as strengths that you might be unaware of. Or perhaps a consultant could help you to sharpen your interview technique.

Never part with a large up-front fee, because the truth is that many of these consultants are usually better at selling themselves and pocketing your fees than they are at selling candidates to employers. Job-hunting can be discouraging if not downright depressing. And these firms’ claims of being able to do all of the legwork for you are naturally very alluring. But don’t let them take advantage of you in your darker moments.
