It would be through Venosa that Klarwein’s greatest fame would arrive, since it was he who introduced Carlos Santana to Klarwein’s art, which resulted in Klarwein’s 1961 masterpiece Annunciation being used as the cover*37 of Santana’s hit 1971 album Abraxas. The success of Santana’s album introduced Klarwein’s work to an audience far beyond the art world (which didn’t know what to do with him anyway), and led to a lucrative side career designing some of the most iconic rock and jazz album covers of all time—so much so that the influential art and culture magazine Juxtapoz called him “the man literally responsible for every great, legendary record cover you’ve ever seen—if he didn’t do it, he inspired it.”

Along with Santana’s Abraxas, Klarwein then became best known for the paintings that Miles Davis commissioned for the jazz-fusion albums, Bitches Brew and Live-Evil. Described now as “‘ground breaking” and “paradigm shifting,” Bitches Brew was highly controversial and a huge hit for Columbia Records, selling over a million copies as one of the bestselling jazz albums of all time. (Bitches Brew is considered by many to be the greatest LP cover of all time.)

Here Klarwein explains in his own descriptive language how he and Miles Davis came to be friends:
