Chapter 18

Just got to the airport to grab Liam. I shouldn’t be too long. Mike messaged Grace as he waited in the drop-off and pickup zone of Manchester airport. He was sorry he agreed to it now but staying away from the flat for a couple of hours after work was just what he needed. After he drops Liam off at home, he might even head to The Three Sisters for a beer or two, play a game on his phone, watch the sport on the big screen, scroll social media or have a gab with the other locals. Anything to give Grace a little space.

Since the incident at Mags’s old flat in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Grace hadn’t really mentioned anything else about the note. Or the neighbour at all, in fact. Mike had felt guilty storming off to bed the way he did, but she was making a big deal out of nothing. He knew Grace and Mags had been close, but to be in denial over her death, and then to think that their new neighbour is a killer, that’s just ridiculous!

Mike rested back in his seat and blew out his cheeks. He checked the status of Liam’s flight, and the information told him he’d already landed, so it shouldn’t be too much of a wait. He passed the time watching people leave taxis, hug their loved one’s goodbye and head into the airport with their cases.

He won’t lie by saying he didn’t envy them.

Wishing he too was going away. Maybe that’s exactly what he and Grace needed. To get away from Manchester for a while and forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life, busy traffic, work, and the same old faces. And now, with Mags passing and the dispute that Grace and the new neighbour are having, a holiday sounds like a great idea. Paris would be lovely; he thought and unlocked his phone again, he was about to search for a deal on a cheap city break but was disturbed by a tap on the window. It was Liam, giving him a thumbs up.

“Hey, mate, I didn’t wake you, did I?” Liam laughed as he headed to the rear of the car and opened the boot, placing his case inside. He climbed into the passenger seat and Mike laughed once he saw his face. Liam looked rough, his cheeks and forehead were pink with sunburn, his eyes were droopy, his hair was scruffy, and a stale beer smell clung to him. “Jesus, mate…” Mike began, “I take it you had a good time?”

“Mate, honestly, yes, I did. It was just what I needed. A proper blowout, you know? Beer, sun, babes, bed. I would have still been there today, if it weren’t for work.”

“Yep… I get you there,” Mike replied and started the car. “I could do with a blowout myself. A booze filled holiday sounds like absolute heaven.”

“You do look a little stressed,” Liam admitted. “Is everything okay?”

Mike nodded and said, “Yeah… well, no.
