Sylvia: If you live your life by the keys of gratitude and loyalty, you will never get derailed, you will never go off track, and you will never have any serious physical or mental or spiritual ills.
Loyalty takes in so much. It means, first of all, loving yourselfâbe loyal to yourself, loyal to your own virtues, loyal to your own feelings, and loyal to your own life theme. Most of all, be loyal to other people and to your religion and to your family and friends. This doesnât mean that we have to be loyal to people who are dishonest and awful or who donât care about us. Thatâs stupid; thatâs loyalty misplaced. Once someone breaks loyalty with me, then our relationship is off. If they donât play fair, then they donât have to play at all.
The other one is gratitude. I think ingratitude, if there is such a thing as âsin,â has got to be a âcardinal sin.â We should be grateful for the fact that we can breathe, hear, and see. If we canât do any of those, like Helen Keller, you can touch. Ingratitude cripples the soul. Be grateful for just being here, experiencing for God. Positive people have happier lives.
Anytime you have a genuinely positive thought about someone, express it to them. Donât think they already know, or they will figure it out. Iâve seen movie stars and celebrities who donât date a lot, because everybody else thinks they wouldnât have a chance with them. They say, âI sit home every Saturday night aloneâ because no one thinks that they need anybody.
The other day a woman came in to deliver the mail to our office, and I hadnât seen her before. I was up at the front desk. I turned to her and said (and really meant it), âMy, youâre a beautiful woman.â She was. She just glowed with beautiful white hair and big, blue eyes.
She later wrote me a card, saying, âYou must have known this was a day in which I felt ugly, unloved, uncared for. Your words meant the world to me.â
I will tell you right now what we women are sadly lacking in: We donât like to compliment men. Thatâs a shame. Men are human beings, and theyâre very sensitive. Tell the man in your life that he is handsome and wonderful. Externalize what you feel and mean it. Stop being so closed up and icy. Give a loving hand. Let all your positive thoughts emanate from your soul.
