Both the respondents felt that the pressure for positive inspection outcomes created divisions between the classroom teachers and the school leadership team. One respondent reflects as follows on the leadership team comments about her art displays:

I was happy to replace the vinyl covering on the exhibitions as I knew what was up there was good anyway, but it was like ‘that has been up there a few weeks don’t you think you should replace it?’ Then you were asked ‘are you sure you want that one up there?’ The ones you put up were to give kids a boost and for children to know that I valued their work … You weren’t allowed to even curate your own work. (Respondent Five)

You get the impression that the Head and the governors are so nervous about the outcome that they get quite authoritarian and start saying you must do that, you must do this by tomorrow and so on and so on. Most of the time the Head and the Deputies were really supportive and helpful: but this seemed to change when an inspection was due. They became tetchy and more dictatorial: it was ‘do this’, ‘don’t do that’, all the time. (Respondent Six)
