But the Mayans’ other system of numbering, generally considered the more sacred of the two, was the ‘head-variant’ system. Here the 13 numbers from zero to 12 were each represented by a hieroglyph showing the head of one of the 13 gods of the upper world. In this numbering system, for example, the god of zero, Mi, is shown with his hand over his jaw. Dr Linda Schele has suggested that this may also represent a particularly unpleasant form of sacrifice in which one’s lower jaw was removed. The absence of the lower jaw in this hieroglyph certainly suggests that ‘zero’ was unable to speak.
