A Confrontation

“I have to go to the tornado laboratory,” Derek explained. “I want to talk to Dr. Johnson again.”

“Now?” Nancy said. “Couldn’t it wait?”

Derek shook his head. “It’s important, Nancy.”

“This is important, too, Derek,” Nancy protested. If only she had her own car here, Nancy thought, feeling frustrated. Then she wouldn’t have to worry about depending on Derek. “We need to stop Jimmy Boyd and Mary Harvey from kidnapping someone.”

“I won’t be long,” Derek promised. He had already started walking away from them, so Nancy knew there was no use in trying to stop him. “I won’t be long,” Derek repeated.

“We’ll be in the food court,” Nancy called to him. “Meet us there.”

She hoped Derek had heard her, because he turned the corner before she had finished talking.

“I’m glad you said that, Nancy,” Bess said. “I’m getting hungry, and I didn’t want to sit up here and wait for him.”

“You know, Derek seems kind of flaky to me,” George said.

“Well, he’s got his problems, all right,” Nancy agreed, “but if he can help me solve this mystery, it may help him get back into school.”

The three of them took the escalator down to the first floor and headed to the food court. The crowd had thinned out considerably since they had been there earlier, so they had a good choice of seats.

“There’s so much to choose from,” Bess said as she began scanning the huge menus that were hanging above the counters of the various eateries. “I’ll never be able to make up my mind.”

“I just want a cup of soup and a salad,” Nancy said.

“I think I’m going to have a hamburger with all of the trimmings,” George said. She started walking toward Western Burgers.

“I’ll wait here, while you and George get your food,” Nancy said to Bess. “Somebody needs to watch our things.”

“We won’t be long,” Bess said, and hurried away toward Little Italy.

Nancy looked around the food court. Being in the Student Union reminded her of Ned Nickerson, her boyfriend, who was in college. And that made her wonder what Ned was doing at this very moment. She wished they were together now, talking about the duffel bag mystery over a hamburger and fries.

“Mmm, this looks so good.”

Nancy came out of her reverie to see Bess carrying a plate piled high with spaghetti and meatballs and two slices of garlic toast.

“You’re right,” Nancy said. “It does look good.”

“They have such huge hamburgers here!”

Nancy looked up to see George returning with one of the biggest hamburgers she had ever seen.

“What is that?” Nancy said.

“It’s called the Oklahoma Burger,” George replied. “They had a Texas Burger, but it’s smaller.”

Nancy laughed. “I’ve heard about the rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma,” she said, “but I didn’t know it extended to the size of hamburgers.”

“Evidently,” George said as she sat down. “And I’m glad, too,” she added as she took a big bite.

Nancy stood up. “Well, I think I still want soup and a salad. I’ll be back in a minute.”

When Nancy reached Super Salad, at the other end of the food court, she considered her choices.
