Jake phoned her that night as promised, and they set a meeting for six o’clock the next morning at Black Point Park and Marina, a public park with a boat ramp off SW 87th. It made sense to meet at dawn on a Saturday; it was a good way to be discreet.

SATURDAY MORNING

Lauren arrived at five-forty. It was pitch-black and the park was closed. At fifteen minutes after six, a black Mercedes diesel pulled up. She watched the silhouette ambling her way.

Jake called her on her cell as he walked over and opened her car door with his phone still stuck to his ear. She caught a light whiff of cigar smoke on his clothes.

“Jake Fleming.” He held onto the upper frame above the car window and dropped clumsily into the seat. He was hunched over, his upper body curved like a gaffer hook.

She twisted her torso in the driver’s seat and contorted her right shoulder to shake his hand. Jake pulled the Non-Disclosure from the inside pocket of his blue blazer and handed it to her. Without reading it, she thumbed to the last page and signed it under the dome light of her car. He exchanged it for a business card, one for the Cormorant Case Company.

“Here’s the deal. The manufacturer sank their military-grade waterproof cases about sixteen miles offshore, near Biscayne National Park.”

“How long ago?”

“Nineteen ninety-four. The cases are time capsules. The marketing team thinks if we make a video of the salvage and open the cases live during a webcast, it will be a marketing bonanza. We want to show that the contents are still dry.”

“Wow. What a great opportunity.” She wished she could see Jake’s face, but there wasn’t enough available light.

“They’re hoping for a big Web audience. Today’s marketing, I guess I don’t have to tell you how everything’s video now.”

“That’s for sure. I have the perfect guy for the project. But a search operation like this can take time.”

“I have the coordinates,” Jake said. “For the wreck.”

“That will make it easier.”

“We think your guy should launch from here, at Black Point. There’s a public boat ramp.”

“Did you mention a boat?” Jake was still mostly a silhouette, and his natural voice sounded strange.

“Is that a problem? Does your guy have access to a boat?”

“He has one, I think. At least he used to, an older sport fisher. It depends on the size of the load. We’ll need to know more details—dimension and weight for starters. I know I asked you on the phone, but do you know the depth?”

“Around fifty feet.”

“That makes it easier.”

“The load weighs over a thousand pounds, but it’s broken up into smaller increments in transport cases. Your guy, what’s his name?”

“Davis Frost.”

“We think he should base the operation out of Boca Chita Key, the island.”

“The place with the lighthouse?”

“That’s it. It has campsites, a bulkhead with dock space, and restroom facilities. He’d fit in as an enthusiast out diving, shooting video.”

“It’s a public park—that might work. What’s down there, in the cases? That’s a lot of weight.
