Anthea drove off at top speed, TOTALLY ignoring the thirty miles-per-hour signs.

‘Hmmmm,’ said Tom. ‘That’s four people running errands in Stonely this morning.’

I didn’t say anything because I was mainly thinking about biscuits.

‘Granny leaves us with a babysitter for the first time ever because she has to run errands in Stonely,’ said Tom. ‘Bob Merry leaves Sally to run errands in Stonely. And Anthea breaks the speed limit because . . .’

‘She has to run errands in Stonely,’ finished Pip. ‘With Janet. A.K.A. Mrs Mackintosh.’

‘Exactly!’ Tom raised his eyebrows. ‘Either this is one big coincidence,’ he said, ‘or they are all in Stonely running errands together.’

Straightaway Pip went all still and staring and then she turned a few cartwheels (because cartwheels sometimes help her think) but then she spotted some people in the distance and stopped doing cartwheels because of not liking people watching her.

‘I don’t think it’s a coincidence,’ Pip said, all whispery. ‘I think there is a reason.’

(Pip is good at spotting connections and patterns, even when they aren’t obvious to anybody else).

‘All those people are in Granny’s book club,’ she said slowly. ‘And last night they were talking about something TOP SECRET happening in Stonely on Saturday.’

At this point I went to sit down on a nearby bench because standing up is tricky when you are trying to think and thinking is not always a natural occurrence for me. Tom and Pip sat down next to me.

‘Pip’s right,’ said Tom, frowning. ‘But what would they be up to that they wouldn’t want anybody to know about?’

We all had a bit of a think about this because it was hard to imagine anything top secret that Granny and her friends might be up to in Stonely. I was just about to tell Tom that I couldn’t think of anything when I remembered about Chris Norris joining Granny’s book club.

I thought a bit more and then I slowly put my hand up because Tom was acting a bit like a teacher and at my school you aren’t allowed to shout out without putting up your hand, even though Dylan Moynihan always does.

I felt more nervous than the time I had to confess to Mrs Vukovitch that I had accidentally worn my alien slippers to school instead of school shoes and couldn’t do PE. My mouth felt dry and my heart started doing backflips.
