It was almost as if Molly had put a curse on her. In the next few weeks, Nina slipped into the past again. Three times. They were not pleasant experiences.

The first time she had found herself in an alley, even poorer and dirtier than the Tudor one she had visited. It was night. There was no one about, though dim lights shone from a few windows. All doors were shut tight, and on some of them something had been roughly painted. She looked closer. A large red cross, hastily slapped onto the wood. What did it mean?

Then, not far off, she heard a bell ringing. Not a church bell, this was smaller. Like a hand bell. And someone was calling out, a mournful cry in the darkness. The words weren’t clear, but the voice was full of misery. It sounded as if it came from the last days of the world.

A rattle of wheels and a handcart came around a corner, pushed by two straining men. Another walked ahead, ringing the bell and calling out. And now Nina could make out the words. “Bring out your dead. Bring out your dead!”

She stepped back into the shadows as a door opened. The cart stopped. A man appeared at the door, carrying something, something small, wrapped in a sheet—

And Nina had not wanted to see any more.
