Chapter 8

Why Me?

Hiring From Within

Why is this company looking to you for this position? This is an important question to ask yourself and the employer. Do you feel that they are looking outside the company to fill this position? If so, then why? Does everyone within the organization avoid the available positions? Are they only looking to you because they have run out of options? You want to ask these questions and more. No one wants to be the last resort.

There are many reasons for hiring someone outside of an organization. It is important to get different perspectives. Fresh blood comes with fresh ideas. A company that never lets anyone in from the outside risks being stuck in a rut. You want to make sure of the reasons the company is looking to you. Get the organization to prove to you that their reasons are legit and beneficial to everyone involved.

Do you have the proper job experience to obtain this position? Chances are you do or you would not have made it through the door. Use this to your advantage. Everyone tends to be nervous during an interview but make sure that you let the employer know you are self-aware. Be confident in the skills you have already acquired. Feel free to share these skills during the discussion. You have made it this far for a reason. The interview process is draining on everyone so do not let it get you down. Stay confident and let the employer know that you are present with the skills, as well as the ability to conquer this position. This is just the company’s chance to get to know you better.

I know that, for the position with which I am interviewing, the company decided to recruit from outside the organization. How did you decide between recruiting from within and going outside?

The answer to this question lies within the interviewer. This might throw the interviewer off. There are always reasons behind hiring from outside the organization. It is hugely important to know why this position has opened up and why someone from within is not able to cover this position. Is this a position that takes certain skills that most people do not have?

Alternatively, is this position commonly filled repeatedly because there is something lacking with it? If the answer is the later, you may want to look elsewhere. You do not want to get into a position that has a high turnover rate. Chances are the rate is high for good reason.
