Moving west along Fourth Street, near the Times Recorder building and the Adena Apartments is an abandoned ­four-story building that at one time housed the Montgomery Ward store. Built in 1925, the building was first used for a company which manufactured “work clothes.”109 Montgomery Ward opened the store in 1928 and was in operation until 1976.110 The tile on this entryway covered a large space with large white and gray tiles placed in a checkerboard pattern. Bordering the tiles is an intricate pattern of smaller dark gray and white tiles. There are what appears to be black tiles along the wall under the windows but they could have been painted at some point. The building remains with windows boarded, but new ownership may lead to renovation of this beautiful brick building.
