Law firms, particularly large law firms, remain stark examples of the gender gap in leadership. Schools in Canada and the U.S. have for years graduated classes that are almost evenly split between men and women. Large law firms duly absorb these new associates in almost equal numbers, and then a few years in, the gender split completely skews as women leave in large numbers.

According to data from research organization Catalyst, in the U.S.:

in 2012, women made up 31.1 percent of all lawyers;

women were 45.4 percent of associates in 2011;

only 19 percent of equity partners at firms are women; and

the trend continues in the academic sector, where only 20.6 percent of law school deans are women.
