CONSTRUCTION OF THE GIRLING DAMPER

The top of the piston is provided with small holes which normally are covered by a flexible disc plate. The illustration shows how this plate is locked by the screwed-on piston rod. Also to be seen in the drawing is the small sleeve valve which has a hole in the skirt and an edge about its circumference which holds a small but strong coil spring in position. The hole in the skirt of this sleeve valve is normally closed when the valve is right up against the main piston; it can only be opened against spring pressure (see sketch on extreme right). The main connections between the compartments above and under the piston are the passages in the hollow piston rod which are controlled by the spring-loaded sleeve valve. An auxiliary but permanent connection is the small orifice in the skirt of the main piston, restricted by a horizontal metering pin. Reference to the drawings shows the complete valve assembly in the base of the cylinder and here also is a permanent connection restricted by a metering pin; this passage connects the main cylinder with the expansion chamber.
