Saturday morning, Nancy called George and found out she was feeling okay. Then she picked up Bess and drove to Albemarle’s.
“Thanks for coming early this morning,” Nancy said.
“No problem,” Bess said. “We don’t have to be there till ten o’clock anyway. It’ll give me a chance to check out some new shoes. I need some sandals to go with my new holiday dress.”
“I’m going straight to Jack Lee’s office. I’ll come get you if he needs to talk to you, too.”
“You’re not going to tell him we were in the personnel office, are you? Or that we hacked into the computer?” Bess asked.
“Not if I can help it,” Nancy said.
Jack wasn’t in his office, so Nancy had him paged. He was there in a few minutes.
“So you and your friend had quite an adventure yesterday, I hear,” Jack said.
Nancy’s mind spun into defense mode. How did he find out we were here after hours last night? she thought. Then her keen instincts jumped in. No one saw us but the person who pushed George down the escalator. He’s talking about the scaffolding, I’ll bet. Seconds later, he confirmed this.
“Those temporary scaffolding structures can be pretty tricky to assemble,” he said. “Sounds like that one was made in a hurry.”
“Did any of your security people take a look at it after it collapsed?” Nancy asked. “I’m not sure it was an accident,” Nancy said, “but I can’t prove that it wasn’t.”
“What do you mean?” Jack sat down behind his desk, and gestured for Nancy to take the seat opposite him.
She began by reminding him of her encounter in the WAVE stockroom and the threat in Bess’s locker. Then she told him about staking out the store the previous night, and George’s assault.
Jack’s large brown eyes narrowed as he listened to Nancy. Then he leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk. “I asked you not to meddle in this case, Nancy. But in a way I’m glad you did—and I respect your opinion. So who do you think is doing all this?” he asked. “And why?”
“I think it’s connected to the thefts you’ve been having here lately,” she answered. “As you know, Ali and Bess are good friends. As a favor to them, I did a little investigating and asked some questions. It looks like someone’s trying to throw me off the case.”
“I see,” Jack said. He looked at her intently.
Nancy couldn’t tell whether he believed her or not. She was determined to make him understand. If he was the top-notch detective that her father’s associates maintained he was, he could be an important ally in clearing Ali’s name.
“Someone I know was able to hack into some of Albemarle’s computer records,” she began, “and—”
“What?!” Jack exploded. “Who?”
“I’d rather not reveal my source,” Nancy answered. “You have to trust me on this. Nothing was done to the records. You have my word that no use will be made of them except what I tell you here, and it will not happen again.”
“I’ll let it go for now,” Jack said.
