YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT ALONE

We become paralyzed if we contemplate the darkness and negativity as if we alone must solve it all. We cannot breathe, imagine, feel, act, or be activists from such a place. We must educate ourselves about all the various places of imbalance in the Soul of the World, since this is simply something we do as part of our citizenship in the sacred world. In keeping with the words of Thich Nhat Hanh, “Do not turn your eyes from suffering.” This instruction is very important. We should think of it as part of our collective job description.

However, we must also realize that as individuals we are not going to solve all problems by ourselves. To hold this kind of unrealistic expectation over ourselves strips us of our true power and effectiveness, our true ability to respond. But the abiding truth of the matter is, in waking to the world as sacred, we come to understand that we can effect change with one cause, one problem, one moment in life that has fallen out of harmony. We can be shapers.

Take Julia Butterfly Hill, author of The Legacy of Luna and executive director of the Circle of Life Foundation, for example. She did not try to solve all the problems of the world. She did not even take on a whole cause at first. She chose one tree — or rather, it chose her. Within the holiness of their encounter, embrace, and dialogue, Julia and the spirit of Luna (a California redwood) brought back an aching soul part to the Soul of the World, namely a model for how to slow down and listen deeply to the wise directives of an ancient tree while simultaneously protecting her. Julia, a Celtic descendant, is, in my mind, one of the true Druid spirits in action within the Soul of the World. When she speaks about the forest she wakes people up to a potent greening spirit. She is a shaper of the world, dedicated to the holy shapes and to the practice of holy shaping.
