Chapter 13

Stann woke up to the sounds of a soft female voice. He smiled and rolled over expecting to find himself in his bed in Kusharna with Talia. Instead, he opened his eyes to a brightly lit room with Fiona and Mae staring at him. He blinked as his memories came back to him. He went to lift his arm to check his face.

“I did my best,” Fiona said. “You have some scars. The poison degrades the tissue so fast it was hard to repair. Your shoulder will be sore, but all the muscles have been repaired. You were lucky.”

Stann grunted and sat up. His shoulder was sore, and his face felt tight. He was thirsty and hungry.

“What can I get you?” Fiona asked.

“Water and six kabobs from Chajon market,” Stann said as he stretched his face and rolled his shoulders.

Fiona smiled. “Water I can do,” she said as she handed Stann a tall pitcher of cold water and a glass. “Mae, can you find some food for Stann?”

Mae shot a look at Fiona and narrowed her cat eyes.

“I don't think Stann is going to escape or attack me while you are gone,” Fiona said to her. “Food.”

Mae tightened the collar on Stann’s mana and left the room.

“She takes her job very seriously,” Fiona said. “And luckily for you, so do I.”

“Thank you for healing me,” Stann said.

“You are welcome. I hope it isn’t the last time,” Fiona said.

Stann looked up to try and read Fiona’s facial expression. “Why?”

Fiona glanced in the direction Mae had left. “You have proven your ability as a fighter. That will have been expected, you are an orc. Now, you will be tested for your magic ability. You will be fighting a mage. He is very powerful.”

“Levels?”

Fiona sighed. “Irrelevant. He has the most powerful mana stones to draw from. He cannot be beat.”

“I need my weapons, especially my shield,” Stann said.

“They want to know how you use your body to store mana, but more importantly how effective it is. If you do well, they will do experiments on you or try to use you.”

Stann snorted. “I already told them how. They just didn’t believe me.”

“Yes. I heard. Dragon magic?”

“It’s not that strange. Anyone can learn it. We teach it in our schools.”

“Anyone?”

Stann heard something in Fiona’s voice, a yearning, or a flicker of hope. He was about to ask her when Mae returned. Stann’s stomach growled when he saw the tray of food. She set it down and he reached for the bread, stuffing it in his mouth.

The two women watched him eat.

“What?” Stann asked.

Fiona sighed and looked at Mae. “You only have a few minutes before you are expected in the ring.”

Stann cursed under his breath and took a big bite of the meat and cheese. He was running through the list of spells he had. He would, of course, use his Stone Skin. Even if they weren’t using weapons, the mage could still attack with ice or fire or energy. He had Shield Bash if he could get his hands on a shield and his Shadow Hands would be very useful.
