Griffin returned to his department-issued car, a silver Blazer that in its previous life was one of ten cars belonging to a wealthy drug dealer from Long Boat Key, Florida.

He removed the FBI card from the dashboard and dropped it onto the seat beside him. Reaching to put his key in the transition, Griffin jumped at the metallic slam on his car’s roof. Incensed, he threw his car door open and stared across his hood at a man who looked as irate as he felt himself.

“You ready to do some detective work, Griffin? Or did all that whining on the phone take it out of you?”

“Who are you?”

“Justin Trainor. You want me? I’m here.” Michael opened Griffin’s car door and got into the passenger seat.

Griffin was amazed at Trainor’s open contempt. He was here to read him the riot act. Off-balance now, Griffin got back into his car.

“Why don’t we meet in the station?” Griffin asked.

“Do you want to hear the truth or the bullshit party line? Where are you staying?”

“The Piedmont, on 59th.”

“Did I ask directions? Do you know the city?”

“Yes, I know the city!”

“Then drive.”

Griffin eased his car into rush hour traffic, wondering how this situation had gotten away from him.

“Did you check in?”

Griffin recognized the detective’s crisp pronunciation. He had developed it himself after listening to orders being snapped at West Point.

“Take your time, Griffin,” Michael Ash suggested sarcastically. “It’s my vacation day.”
