Chapter Nine

Thresher didn’t say any more. He just left me wondering what he was cooking up. When the Rolls purred over his drive I could see my own car waiting outside the house. Quiet as our approach was, Anne Thresher heard it and opened the front door. Cindy came rushing up beside her. As I doubted that Thresher would have told them anything I assumed they’d come back to find the police milling about.

We climbed out and Anne Thresher called out, ‘How nice to see you, Mr Scott.’

Cindy looked at me curiously, remembering what she had told me and wondering whether I really had burgled them. I couldn’t enlighten her and Thresher certainly wouldn’t, but her expression was one of hopeful expectancy. She gave me a tentative little wave of her fingers. I grinned at her and stuffed my hands in my pockets to try to keep them still. Before I could get round the Rolls, Thresher called to his wife, ‘Mr Scott is not staying, my dear. Unfortunately he has to drive straight back to London.’ And then to me, ‘You’ll find the keys in your car.’

I rolled along the main road until I spotted a public callbox. I rang Maggie’s place. She answered as if she’d been standing right by the phone waiting for it to ring.

‘I’m on my way in,’ I said. ‘I should be there in a little over half an hour.’

She gasped in relief, then snapped, ‘Where the hell have you been, Willie? I’ve been worried sick. You — you bastard to do this to me. Oh God, I could kill you.’

‘Careful, love. I was indisposed as they say. Helping the police with their inquiries. Anyway, I’m out and I’ll see you in a minute.’ I waited while Maggie still hurled curses at me. I well knew what she’d suffered. Then I asked, ‘By the way, did Tom Moody contact you?’

‘Nobody’s contacted me. Why?’

‘It doesn’t matter. Leave the door open. And, Meg, I’m sorry.’

As I went to the car I thought it odd that Tom hadn’t kept his promise.

At Maggie’s place her soft passion was a vivid reminder of what I’d almost lost. We were always frantically ardent during times of crisis, having run into so many situations that had threatened to separate us. It was a time when we meant everything we said, when each utterance of love was a deep release of
