The cry from Elizabeth as she knelt at her father’s bedside tore him in half. They’d arrived just moments after the doctor had gotten there. Mr. and Mrs. Landing were standing outside the door; the look that Jack gave him as he followed Libby into the small house was enough warning for Charlie. He’d braced himself, but hadn’t been prepared for how her pain would make him feel. He was watching her break, and there was nothing he could do.

“Hannah? Where’s Hannah?” Libby called out.

Mrs. Landing went to her, holding her shoulders and allowing her to sob.

Rys was the one that answered her. “She’s out in the barn. She’s the one that came and got me. She had gone in the house to get a bucket to clean her doll, and when she came back out he had fallen off his stool and was just lying there. I tried to get her to come with me to get you, but she wanted to stay with him. She hasn’t left the barn since Mr. Landing brought your Pa inside.”

Libby nodded between sobs into Mrs. Landing’s skirt. Charlie wasn’t sure what to say or to do, so when Jack motioned for him to follow him outside, he did. Charlie didn’t need Jack to tell him what he already knew, so before Jack could make an attempt, Charlie stopped him. “I’ll be here every day, helping. Milo and I are planning some things over at his place, but I’ll be here too.”

Jack was a quiet man so Charlie wasn’t surprised when he just nodded and started toward the barn. Charlie followed, but at a distance. His mind was turning. All the possibilities for Libby’s future churned, causing more questions than answers. He wondered if Libby would stay on the farm, and if not, where would she go? He thought about what would happen to Hannah if Libby married and her husband didn’t want to take in the child. The churning was making him dizzy. He resolved to do whatever Libby needed him to do. When he walked into the barn and saw Hannah, filthy and sleeping in the corner, he knew that the thing to do was get her to the house and cleaned up.
