An individual in a race for selection should always be open to opportunities for short-term consulting contracts, particularly if the search is likely to go over three months. At the same time, taking on consulting work during the job sourcing process can also introduce complications.

POWER STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING CONSULTING THROUGH YOUR TRANSITION

As you build your platform and work through your networking opportunities, be very clear if you are committed to finding a full-time position or if you are committed to full-time consulting. Companies are more reluctant to hire you as a consultant, particularly in long-term assignments, if they believe you are likely to leave as soon as you get a job.

Consulting assignments are fantastic for bridging financial needs, but they will also cut into the time, energy, and focus you have for finding a full-time position. A common phenomenon is for people to become comfortable with the level of consulting work that keeps them moving but it takes the drive out of their sourcing campaign for a full-time position.

Making a commitment to being a full-time consult is a significant shift. For most people making the transition, the greatest challenge is building an effective business development process, including sales and marketing channels. This can be extremely expensive and time-consuming to establish, particularly if you are not naturally comfortable with sales.

Networking with other consultants is a great way to build capacity and potentially take online larger assignments. If you plan to do this on a short-term basis, it is best to have a solid letter agreement regarding business development, ownership of intellectual property, and sales commissions for bringing in new clients. Committing to long-term partnership agreements, forming a corporation, or investing a great deal of money in sales and marketing initiatives may not make sense if your commitment is to find a full-time position.

There are typically a great number of consulting positions for talented and committed professionals in the large consulting companies. These positions include solid pay and a great opportunity to build networks. At the same time, these positions typically demand sixty to eighty hours of work per week and include extensive travel requirements.
