The end, we’re moving toward it.

Toward it, and away. The days

are shorter now. The pumpkin

decomposing on the porch

volunteered its seeds in spring.

In the garden I watch a sunflower dip,

the birds pecking, gorging, dropping

empty shells onto the dirt. Their atoms

keep reshaping themselves. I step

to the window where the light

seeps between blinds, where music

dawns, and the little roar

of gathering swallows trickles in—

swallows moving toward us, drifting,

always toward us, lifting in the sky

and then away.
