EDWARD GIBBON ON THE MURDER OF HYPATIA: DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (1776–1788)

Edward Gibbon’s (1737–1794) History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is widely considered one of the founding works of modern scholarly history. In six volumes, published over twelve years, Gibbon used primary sources to construct a rational and secular history of the Roman Empire, its fall, and the nature of the following Middle Ages. He was one of the first historians to blame the rise of Christianity and the formation of the Church for the fall of Rome and ensuing “Dark Ages,” an idea that was popular among Enlightenment philosophers and the Protestants of Great Britain. His story of the murder of Hypatia is central to his argument about the destructive influence of the Church, and it has been repeated in this form to the present day.
