Chapter 4

When Joanna was discharged five days later, she felt like she was in the exact same place with Nathan as when she was admitted. They had long chats into the night and she spent every moment with him that she could. They beat the infection, but Joanna wasn’t sure if they could beat her broken heart.

“I don’t get why you are so hung up on this guy,” Porsche said, as they sat in their hotel room. They were going to a movie later on. It wasn’t the most exciting of vacation activities, but Joanna had said that she wasn’t up for renting a car and traveling a long distance. Porsche agreed, given that she had just gotten out of the hospital.

“Because he’s different,” Joanna replied.

“I understand that,” Porsche sighed. “But he’s also just like every other playboy out there.”

“He’s not,” Joanna tried to defend him. “He really isn’t. He said he hadn't been with anyone else since he moved out here.”

“Exactly.” Porsche quipped. “He says that, but you have no proof. And in addition, when was he going to tell you? Or was he just going to stay on the other side of the country forever?”

“Do you believe him?” Porsche asked, and sighed

“It’s not that easy,” Joanna said, with a shrug.

“But it is that easy,” she said. “Don’t you see? He’s probably the type of guy who just runs from his commitments.”

“He is the type of guy who runs away from his commitments,” Joanna said. “But not this time. This time, he is committed to fixing them.”

Porsche shook her head.

“I think you’re getting into something that you shouldn’t,” she said. “But what do I know?”

Joanna sighed.

“I really don’t want to fight with you,” she said. “Porsche, you’re my best friend in the whole world. Believe me when I say I would have an incredibly hard time choosing between you and Nathan. But...I really do think that we have something special.”

“So when was he going to tell you that he just got up and left?”

“Well, I did delete my social media and change my number,” Joanna said. “So it’s not like he had a chance.”

“Oh my God,” Porsche put her head in her hands. “You are playing right into his hands.”

“Maybe I want to,” Joanna said and gave her best friend a quirky smile.

“Maybe you want to?” Porsche asked. “You’re a strong modern woman! You’re a …”

“I know,” Joanna said. “But isn’t part of being a strong woman making choices? Porsche, you don’t understand. I think he’s my soulmate.” There was an argument to be made for this to be an antiquated way of thinking, but for Joanna, it was very true.

“You think he’s your soulmate, but he up and moved a million miles way…”

“Not forever…”

“And then you were willing to move on and delete all your social media and just... forget him. Until you looked into his eyes again. Or is it that he saved your life, and you think that no one else can save you?”

“I…” Joanna froze. “Well, no one else can save my life.
