Our minds are evolving to enable us to perceive this truth, so that our behaviour will adapt in the direction of love and cooperation, rather than fear and conflict. There was a time in the history of humanity when fearing death was the smartest thing you could do. Those who feared death and took care to avoid harm survived and bore children. Fast forward many generations and we are their children, and the genes for ‘fearing death’ are alive and well in most of us, having been passed on to us by our ancestors.

But this fear is no longer appropriate. It contributes to our sense of separation and tribal antagonism. In the age in which we now live it is more evolutionarily advantageous for us to perceive and believe that we don’t die – because if we don’t die, then we don’t have to be afraid that others might harm us, and we therefore have the ability to be loving, empathic and compassionate instead of fearful of our own demise. I argue, then, that mediumship is a naturally selected response to our changing social conditions, beyond the tribe, towards a global community. Nature has given us the means to stop fearing death, so that we may cooperate and help each other live fully.
