Whoosh. Whoosh.

It came by again.

Whoosh. Whoosh.

Whoosh, whoosh.

The sound got even quieter.

Whoosh. Whoosh.

Ever so gently, both top hats landed and settled down on their heads.

“Well?” Daniel asked, from far in the distance.

“Two direct hits, Sir Daniel. Perfect!” Mary yelled back to him.

As soon as the words left her mouth, Daniel was standing between them.

“Such accuracy! Such control! The spectators in the stands lavish me with standing ovations, time and time again. They only see my perfect shots, and they call it a gift. What they don’t see are the years of practice and conditioning that went into becoming an athlete of this caliber. Were they there for me when I was sidelined for an entire season with the worst case of top hat thrower’s wrist any doctor has ever seen? No. They left me, and looked for another champion. But, now, as I make one perfect toss after the other, literally redefining the sport of top hat throwing by taking it to levels the fans never dreamt possible, they cheer for me with vigor. Oh, their loyalty is fickle, at best! So, tonight, I accept your accolades and I rejoice in the spotlight, knowing that one day - maybe a day very far in our future - but, one day nonetheless, an ambitious young top hat thrower will come along and shatter all of my records.”

“It’ll never happen, Sir Daniel. You’re the greatest,” Gilbert assured him.

Mary asked him, “How did you make your voice sound like it was coming at us from everywhere?”

“Oh, that? Easy! I can throw my voice every bit as good as I can toss a top hat. I can throw your voice anywhere, too. Go ahead, say something. What do you want me to throw?”

Mary cupped her hands and yelled, “Ghosts don’t scare me!”

“Okay, here goes,” Daniel replied.

From way behind them, as if someone was yelling to them from the street, they heard her voice, “Ghosts don’t scare me!”

Then, from the left side only, they heard her voice, “Ghosts don’t scare me!”

Then, from the right side only, they heard her yell, “Ghosts don’t scare me!”

Then, from up through the ground at their feet, they heard Gilbert’s voice quiver, “Ghosts scare me… a lot!”

“Hey! How’d you do that?” Gilbert asked. “I didn’t even say anything.”

“I got skills. What can I say?” Daniel replied, as they both stood there in wonder.

Then he said, “Okay, enough of this voice and top hat throwing stuff foolishness - isses. It’s time for some real fun!”

He danced around them, jollier than they’d ever seen.

Bing. Bing.

“Come, my friends. We’ve all been waiting for you. I told everyone what a great time I’ve been having with jooz guys and they decided to throw us a party. It’s already started! Follow me. Run!”

With that, Daniel was off racing ahead of them, dodging headstones as if he were running an obstacle course.

“Wait up!” They both yelled as they ran along behind him, their flashlight beams bouncing up and down.

They ran past all of the low stubby grave markers and through the maze of crypts in the middle of the cemetery.
