I WOKE UP SOMETIME in the early hours of the morning. The sun was just rising over the horizon and its rays penetrated the motel room’s thin curtains, bathing it in a subtle red glow. Damien was asleep in the other bed, and Samael sat in a chair beside the door, his head tilted at the awkward angle of someone who was certainly asleep. I chuckled softly. Some guard he was.

My thoughts returned to last night’s events. I remembered waking up shortly after falling asleep to the sound of Damien coming in. I figured they had switched guard shifts several times throughout the night. I began to think about how the mark on my hand had glowed after Samael made me come. I blushed at the recollection of how forward I had been last night. I’d never acted like that before, although it was certainly enjoyable. Did it have something to do with the mark?

Maybe there was some connection to my illness as well. I began feeling better as soon as Samael and I started getting intimate, and in a way it felt as if my sickness was what drove me to be so blunt and sexual last night. I remembered that I’d felt a little sick before becoming involved with Damien as well, but it had disappeared as soon as we became physical.

A dawning realization overcame me, and I began to recount the past few days carefully in addition to considering what I knew to be true about the mark. I slowly began to develop a theory about the mark’s nature, and, although I didn’t have proof, it made perfect sense. I wanted to tell Damien and Samael about it, but I decided to let them sleep a little longer. They would need the rest.

About an hour later Damien’s alarm went off. Within half a second of hearing it he had turned it off and was sitting up in bed. He turned to me and gave me a sleepy smile which fell when he saw Samael asleep at the door.

“That bastard,” he muttered. He got up and walked to where Samael sat and slapped him in the side of the head. Samael woke with a start, waving his arms around frantically to fend off the sudden attack. “You’re supposed to be keeping watch.”

“And you’re not supposed to hit me,” Samael replied, closing his eyes and leaning back in the chair. Damien slapped him again in response.

“Get up. We have to get moving.” Samael got up and went to the bathroom, muttering something under his breath as he crossed the room. Damien turned to me. “How are you feeling?”

“Much better now.”

He nodded. “You were asleep when I got back, so I figured it was best not to wake you. I’ve got ibuprofen as well as some nausea medication in case you need it at any point. I picked up some first aid stuff too.”

“Thank you.” I almost said something about the realization I’d come to earlier, about how the mark affected me, but I decided that now wasn’t the best time.
