CHAPTER EIGHT

THAT NIGHT, Mainwaring put on a double guard. He ordered the men who went below to sleep with their boots on and their weapons close at hand.

Of course, no one slept. Even the old hands lay awake in their hammocks, knowing at any moment they might be called to scramble onto the deck into a night filled with gunfire and explosions.

Daniel lay awake like the rest, trying not to think.

Just as the midnight bell was being struck, he fell asleep and had a vivid dream:

He saw himself from above, floating facedown in the ocean, like the dead bodies of the men he had seen that day. But before he could take in the full horror of the sight, the dream suddenly shifted and he was in his body, peering at the underwater world through his own eyes, hearing the sounds, muffled and indistinct, through his own ears. The water all around him glowed with a strange, milky-white light.

The waves foamed and surged around him, dragging him under. He tried to swim, but his arms and legs were numb from cold and exhaustion. As he sank, the thought flashed by that this was how his father must have felt in his last moments.

Above he could hear the curling and crashing of waves. Below there was a deep silence.

Then, all at once, a sword came tumbling through the water and fitted, as if by magic, into his hand. His fingers closed around the handle, and he felt sure and able.

He whipped the blade through the milky murk. To his astonishment, the white cloudy water parted before him. Overhead he could see blue sky, with white clouds drifting by. Holding fast to his sword, he broke through the surface, taking in a lungful of clean, pure air.
