IN THE HOTEL LOBBY a Huthon woman stood with the manager, who spoke to her in a serious and soothing tone. The woman’s eyes were nervously scanning the space around them. As they entered, the little girl wrenched her hand free of Calin’s grip and hurtled towards the woman. She was instantly swept up into the woman’s arms and a firm kiss was placed on the child’s forehead before being set on her feet.

‘Enni! Why did you run off? I was so worried.’ The woman stroked her fair hair.

‘I’m sorry, Mama. But the man gave me a message. He made me go.’

‘What man?’ Falvii asked. The woman looked to him questioningly and he now addressed her. ‘Sorry, I should explain. Your daughter – Enni, is it? – found us at the pools and gave us a message. But she has no memory of why.’

‘We think she was mindheld,’ Calin added quickly. ‘But now we know it was a man.’ She smiled encouragingly at the girl. ‘You remembered, Enni.’

‘Yes. Yes, it was a man!’ The child’s grin was more of relief than anything.

‘Mindheld? What are you saying?’ The woman pulled her daughter closer to her.

Calin explained how some people cultivated skills to control the thoughts and actions of others by hypnosis. It had originally been developed as a form of psychotherapy, but to use it on a child was a shameful action. The mother looked horrified and immediately nestled her child even closer.

‘Can you tell these people more?’ she asked Enni. ‘Who did this to you?’

The girl’s face was a picture of concentration and she closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she spoke clearly. ‘He was Huthon and about this tall.’ She jumped up, trying to reach a point in the air above Calin’s head. ‘And he had a beard.’

‘Anything else?’ Falvii queried.

Enni took a few seconds to think. ‘He had a scar, just here.’ She drew a line from the corner of her right eyebrow to the top of her ear.
