CHAPTER 11
Only a few yards away from her, Johnson, the groundskeeper, held Hari firmly by the collar and was lifting him up onto his tiptoes. Hariâs face was flushed, and Lizzie knew instantly that the man was choking him.
âIâm going to send for the police,â Johnson growled. âNo circus for you. I can spot the likes of you a mile off.â
Lizzie scrambled to her feet and ran to him. âLet him breathe! Youâre strangling him!â
Johnson relaxed his grip a little, but didnât let the boy go.
Hari clutched at his throat, gasping. âLizzie ⦠get Fitzy â¦â
âWhat are you doing to him?â Lizzie yelled. âStop it!â
The groundskeeper blinked in surprise at Lizzieâs fury. âIâm doing my job,â he protested. âI found this little weasel snooping around in the gardens, up to no good.â
âYouâre a rotten liar. Youâre just picking on him âcause heâs Indian!â Lizzie shouted.
Johnsonâs mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out of it. Lizzie thought he looked like an ugly fish.
âI reckon heâs the thief who stole Lady Susannahâs jewels,â the groundskeeper finally managed to grunt. âAnd I can prove it.â
âYouâre crazy,â Hari managed to say. âYouâve had it in for me since we came here. Admit it.â
âI saw you shovinâ something black in your pocket!â Johnson shouted, shaking Hari like a terrier with a rabbit. âIt was a bit of her ladyshipâs jet, wasnât it? You stashed it out here, didnât you?â
âNo!â
âProve it, then,â Johnson said triumphantly. âTurn out your pockets.â
Hari tried to wriggle free, but Johnson held his collar tightly and grabbed his arm for good measure.
âCome on, Hari,â Lizzie said, giving Johnson a glare that could burn through steel. âYouâd better do as he says. I know you didnât steal nothing.â
âNo! I wonât do it!â Hari yelled. âHe canât make me.â
Lizzie stepped forward, wondering why Hari had said that. Surely he didnât have anything to hide.
âOh, I can make you, all right!â Johnson set off toward the castle, hauling Hari with him. âIâll drag you in front of the Maharaja, and you can tell him why youâve got your pockets full of his fiancéeâs jewels. Then weâll see whatâs what!â
Lizzie ran along behind the groundskeeper as he hauled Hari all the way to the front doors. He shoved them open with his shoulder, revealing a startled balding man in the hallway â the chief butler, Collins. Lizzie recognized him from the grand dinner.
âFetch the Maharaja, Collins,â Johnson barked. âI think heâll want to see what this little brat has been squirreling away while his back was turned.â
âRight away,â the butler muttered through his teeth. He gave Lizzie and Hari a distasteful look. âPerhaps the children could be taken to wait outside?â
âThey wonât get up to any mischief with me here to watch âem,â Johnson said, glowering.
âWeâre not thieves,â Hari snapped at him. âYouâll see.â
âNot another word out of either of you, or Iâll crack your heads together!â the groundskeeper snapped.
Collins rolled his eyes and disappeared up the great sweeping staircase. Lizzie stood quivering with anger at Johnson being so brutal and stupid.
