Andean titi monkey at Tambopata. It tends to go from tree to tree in search of leaves, insects or flowers, close to the higher mountains of this Amazonian rainforest.

The Birds of Tambopata

There are more than 600 species of birds in Tambopata National Reserve. There are birds that frequent the lakes, others the rivers, the dense forest, the open forest, the Amazonian grasslands, the swamps and the Amazonian canopy. These feather-covered vertebrates, which can walk on the ground and swim as well as fly, have different beaks according to their species and genus. The light weight of their bones allows them to fly easily. At the lakes in Tambopata, the birds most often seen are the hoatzin, cormorants, herons and the kingfisher; within the forest, species include the toucan, razor-billed curassow and grey-winged trumpeter; in the rivers, the species include the horned screamer, vultures and the king vulture; in the open forest there are different species of macaws; and high in the Amazonian canopy lives the great predator, the magnificent harpy eagle. The following are some of the extraordinary birds found in the exuberant forest of Tambopata.
