Chapter Eight

THE WARM HEART AWARD

The door leading the way from Mama’s kitchen must have its own magic because as Mars steps through it, she thinks she’s been transported just as before. The room they enter is of an entirely different size and scale. Much bigger than all the others they’d been in, including the Workshop. The warmth of Mama’s kitchen is completely swallowed up by the cool, colossal space—a theater, Mars realizes as her eyes adjust—with more seats than Mars has ever seen. Way more than at the community theater where they go on field trips to see puppet shows, and way more than at church. The theater is circular, with the stage in the middle with the seats surrounding it. The view makes Mars just a little dizzy at first — the stage so far below them and all those seats and all those stairs.

Cheers and applause echo in the darkness and make the room rumble. Elves of all shapes and sizes seated around the stage direct their applause toward a proud elf in a very fancy costume. Jerome turns to the girls with a finger on his lips and corrals them to a trio of empty seats in the back row. They sit as close to the aisle as they can, just like Mama Claus told them to.

“I want to congratulate every single elf in this room for another successful Christmas!” The elf on stage says in a voice Mars could have heard on the radio. It is loud, smooth and all-around joyful. The elf beams a white smile and waves his hands to the crowd, turning around to face everyone. “Because of your hard work, we reached more homes in more places and we did it faster than we’ve ever done it before!”

The elves cheer and cheer in their seats. Mars feels the electric energy of the room in her stomach and in her chest. She cheers along with the elves and claps. Savvy looks up at her with surprise. Mars feels her face heat with embarrassment. She shrugs shyly. “Sorry.”

Savvy smiles at her. A big full smile with all her teeth except for the missing one. “I knew you’d start to have fun!”

Mars shrugs again. Now that she’d eaten something, her headache is going away. And Mama Claus said they were staying for dinner no matter what. Might as well enjoy it, right? She thinks about her Mama, though, and worries about her worry. Mamas get angry when they’re scared. And being unexpectedly away is the worst way to scare them. The more she thinks about it, the more concerned she gets and the less she claps. Savvy frowns at her.

“It’s been a good Christmas Gathering. I know y’all have worked real hard and you’re ready for this good vacation. You’re gonna get it, I promise! Just hold on a little longer! Who up there trying to sneak toward the exit? We see you!”

Folk chuckle.

“We’ve got one last award today and then we’re gonna let you hard-workin’, hungry folk have yourself some dinner.
