By then, Macha was leading then through paths that were much wider than any of the paths they had been on before. These paths were bordered by hedges three meters high. As they hurried after Macha, they heard movements, rustling, low growling and occasional roars. Macha led them safely on.

Forty-four minutes later they came out of the paths and through the mist. In front of them was a lake and right in the middle of the lake was an island. Ripples of water constantly hit the bank they stood on. The ripples were caused by a huge whirlpool that whirled and bubbled around and around just in front of the island.

Above a black swan hovered, its great wings flapping silently as it showed Mefistofelees where Badger and the rest were.

Mefistofelees listened as he saw Macha point to the island and say, “My mother told me there was a treasure on the island. She didn’t know what the treasure was but she said it was guarded. She told me many had tried to claim the treasure.” Macha turned to Badger. “She told me none had returned from the island; some didn’t even reach it; the whirlpool took them. My mother made me promise never to seek the treasure. She said it was meant for someone with more magic than I have. Perhaps it is meant for you, Grey One. Perhaps the treasure is the music of the harp. I don’t know... but it is the only place in the mists that I know of where the music might be.”

Suddenly Beano began to bark. “Master! Look!”

They all saw a small coracle bob up from the centre of the whirlpool. It shot around and around, moving quickly to the edge of the swirling water. Suddenly it was flung out into calmer water. Then it began to float towards them.

Mefistofelees breathed loudly and wiped saliva from his mouth as he saw the coracle reach the bank.

The coracle was made of a type of black skin stretched tightly over a frame of reeds. There was room for only one person to sit in it.

Badger looked out towards the island and the whirlpool again. Turning to the others he said, “Well, it looks like I’ll be getting a ride out to the island.” He picked up Beano’s worried thoughts. “Don’t worry, Beano, when I get near the whirlpool I’ll just float over to the island. I’ll be O.K.” He felt Macha was right. The music must be on the island.

“Master,” thought Beano. “Look at your belt.”

Badger looked down. As he did, he felt his magic ripple through him. The diamond was completely black. In seconds he was glowing with powerful magic. Smiling, he jumped into the coracle. Revolving slowly the craft began to float away from the bank.

“Be careful, Grey One!” shouted Macha.

“Yes, master!” barked Beano. “Be very careful!”

Macgillycuddy said nothing. Looking around he shuddered. He wished he was out of the mists. At least above he could run away when danger threatened. Down here he would get lost and maybe even attacked by other monsters if he ran away.
