“Anything to report?” Rocco’s voice filled the car, cutting off the soft melody of late night radio.

“My ass is numb and I need more gas for the car,” I replied, stretching out my legs as far as I could in the cramped space of my car. Which wasn’t actually that far.

“With Mae,” Rocco said, irritation bleeding into his tone.

“Today was the same as the past five days. She takes Zack for a walk, sometimes to the park, although today, they went to the bookstore. She went to the pharmacy to pick up something for her mother, who seems to be under the weather. They ordered takeout for dinner, and now she’s been inside for the past…” I glanced at my watch. “Four hours.”

“Keep it up.”

Rocco was tense—we all were. The ongoing war with the Russians was slowly spilling out of the city and into the surrounding suburbs, putting many smaller families in the line of fire. Aldo had excelled at keeping the smaller families safe so that all the work we did could continue even during times of conflict. It seemed the Russians didn’t take too kindly to having all their major players wiped out by us.

They deserved it, though. After what happened at the funeral, there was no telling how far they would go to reach Rocco and hurt him. Which meant twenty-four-seven surveillance on Mae to keep her safe purely because Rocco had publicly shown her favor. He didn’t need that to come back and bite him on the ass, but there was another reason I was here.

A reason Rocco refused to say out loud, but I knew it anyway.

He wanted to know who Zack’s father was. Who was the man who had claimed Mae’s heart to the point of having a child? What did he do? What did he look like? And how much of a hindrance would he be for us when seeking to claim Mae as ours?

Rocco was also hoping Mae would lift her ‘no contact’ rule, which she still claimed she needed despite how freaky they’d gotten at the restaurant.

“Rocco?” I said softly, noting that he still hadn’t hung up.

“What?”

“She’s had no visitors.”

“Good.” He paused. “Dino⁠—”

“I know.” I knew he was going to tell me to be careful. That she was important in ways he couldn’t explain. He didn’t need to say it. I already understood that whatever love Rocco had for Mae hadn’t dampened during their years apart.

“Thank you.”

The line clicked and the call ended, plunging my car back into darkness. I turned my attention back to the house and scanned the perimeter for anything that could have changed in those few moments. Luckily, everything looked good. There was an uncomfortable itch in the back of my mind, though, an itch that wouldn’t settle until I was back with Rocco. I felt like I should be there, helping Jian to keep him safe. Though it wasn’t unpleasant being here for Mae, I just wanted to make sure Rocco’s grief didn’t make him do anything stupid.
