2009-2016

In March 2009, Pete was admitted to hospital after collapsing from a kidney ailment. He was diagnosed with seven large kidney stones, which were removed with laser surgery.

Trivia: 2009's Transatlantic Right Round by Flo Rida sampled Dead Or Alive's You Spin Me (Round Like A Record). As of 2014, it had sold over 5.5-million copies in the US alone!

In September 2010, Burns returned to music, releasing the solo single, Never Marry An Icon. Produced and co-written by the Dirty Disco, the single was released by Steve Coy's label, Bristar Records.

Dead Or Alive's UK#1 You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) and UK#11 Lover come Back To Me were included on the July 2012 multi-artist compilation Pete Waterman Presents the Hit Factory – an album containing some the biggest hits associated with Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Moreover, in December 2012, Pete performed at the one-off Hit Factory Live show at London's O2 Arena. The multi-artist event saw performances from numerous Stock, Aitken and Waterman-associated artists such as Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Sinitta and Hazell Dean. Pete performed My Heart Goes Bang, Lover Come Back To Me, Brand New Lover, Something In My House and You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), though seemingly suffered a wardrobe malfunction – spending much of his performance trying to, but being unable to, untie a knot on his costume. Waterman, excited by Pete's performance, asked him to work with him again. Waterman arranged for Pete to work with a new songwriter in his studio – but nothing was achieved.

Pete was declared bankrupt in December 2014. In April 2015, Pete was evicted from a rented flat for non-payment of over £34,000 in rent.

In September 2016, Peter made an appearance on the UK television special Celebrity Botched Up Bodies: “The amount of surgeries I’ve had are absolutely minimal compared to the reconstructive surgeries I’ve had. Probably 300.” Within the episode, Pete stated: “"I hope when I'm 80 that I get to Heaven and God doesn't recognise me".”

Pete was due to be a guest on UK chat show Loose Women on Monday 24 October. However, Pete died of cardiac arrest the day before, on 23 October 2016. He was only 57.

In October, 2016, a 19-disc box set titled Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI was released by Edsel Records. The box set features all records, singles and rarities produced by Dead or Alive in the 1983–2010 timespan, including Pete Burns' solo releases. Coy hinted there may be a second box set in the future to come and previously unreleased Dead or Alive albums as well.

On 29 October, the opening celebrity dance routine for BBC's Strictly Come Dancing was performed to Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) – something that had been planned prior to Pete's death. After the number, hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly paid tribute to Burns and sent their condolences to his family.
