THIRTY-SIX

We had a long history, Michael (Big Mickey) Franze and me. Going all the way back to when he was a close friend of my father. He’d been the Medical Examiner in Huntsdale during those years my father was the police chief. And he was still here doing the job now. It was a pretty remarkable record of longevity.

He was more than just the Medical Examiner in Huntsdale though. The man was a force, a presence around town. Everyone called him Big Mickey because he stood well over six foot and must have weighed somewhere around three hundred pounds. He showed up everywhere in Huntsdale too—drinking coffee at a diner every morning; in the stands at Huntsdale High football and basketball games; he was even grand marshal for the annual Fourth of July parade through downtown Huntsdale.

As someone once said about him—for a guy who dealt in death for his job, he sure brought a lot of life to the town.

He was the only person who I thought I might be able to talk to candidly about Caitlin.

To tell everything I was thinking right now about my sister, no matter how crazy or outlandish or impossible it might seem.

I couldn’t really do that with my mother.

So here I was in Big Mickey Franze’s office trying to make some sort of sense out of everything that had happened.

“It certainly is strange,” he said. “I mean that body being found in your old house. And in your sister’s bedroom, too. I’m sure all of these things keep bringing up some terrible memories for you, Nikki.”

“And they never seem to stop happening either, do they?”

First, there had been The Nowhere Men, a group of sexually sick men who abducted teenaged girls, then filmed their murders for their own perverted enjoyment. I caught the man in the group who confessed to killing my sister before he died—who amazingly turned out to be a respected man in Huntsdale, the District Attorney.

You never know about the evil that is hiding in some people.

After that, there were more murders connected to my sister’s death, with the killer leaving behind roses just like the roses that were on my sister’s body when she was found. Taunting me with the memory of Caitlin again. That killer turned out to be another FBI agent who had been going through the motions of working with me on the case, while secretly carrying out a series of murders on young girls.

First the DA, then an FBI agent. People I thought I could trust. As a result, I trust very few people these days, except—I suppose—my partner, Alex. You always have to trust your partner. And I trusted Franze because my father had trusted him.

“What do you think’s going on?” he asked me.

“Obviously someone has targeted me—and the memory of Caitlin too—in some sort of crazy, deadly game that they’re playing. The woman who’s the look-alike for me and maybe my sister. The note claiming to be from Caitlin. And now the girl dying in Caitlin’s old bedroom.
